Peoria Presiding Judge George Anagnost has announced his retirement, effective March 1, 2024. Judge Anagnost has served the Peoria Municipal Court for over 29 years, beginning his tenure in May 1994. Expressing gratitude for his time as the court's first full-time presiding judge, Judge Anagnost stated, "It has been a tremendous honor to lead the Peoria Municipal Court."

Mayor Jason Beck commended Judge Anagnost for his dedication and compassionate approach to justice, saying, "Judge Anagnost has served our city very well, displaying judicial temperament of caring and compassion from the bench." The Peoria City Council also expressed appreciation for Judge Anagnost's long-standing service and extended their best wishes for his retirement.

With the impending retirement, recruitment for the next Peoria Presiding Judge is currently underway. The application period for qualified candidates will close on February 21, with the Peoria Judicial and Public Defender Advisory Board reviewing applications and resumes starting on February 22. The Board will then select up to five candidates to be interviewed by the City Manager. Following the interviews, the City Manager will recommend an applicant or applicants for consideration by the City Council.

The Peoria Municipal Court plays a crucial role in the community, handling criminal misdemeanors, traffic violations, city code violations, injunctions prohibiting harassment, and orders of protection. The court's commitment to serving the Peoria community with pride, fairness, and unwavering dedication has been recognized by Judge Anagnost, who has had the pleasure of working with outstanding individuals throughout his tenure.

As the recruitment process moves forward, the City Council and the Peoria community eagerly anticipate the appointment of a new presiding judge who will continue the court's tradition of excellence.
