Students at Grand Canyon University had the opportunity to engage with professionals in the field of education during Lopes Teach Up Week. The event featured insightful discussions and connections with representatives from various educational institutions.
During the College of Education Dean’s Speaker Series, award-winning alumni shared their experiences with over 140 students and faculty members. Melissa Martin, a principal at Chinle Junior High School, emphasized the importance of giving back to one's community and leveraging existing relationships for success in teaching.
Aga Cook, a fifth-grade teacher and curriculum coordinator, highlighted the value of incorporating real-life applications into education by drawing on skills from a different field. She emphasized the significance of inspiring students to pursue their dreams and educating them about various career pathways.
Ashley Meyer, a first and second grade teacher at Horizon Honors Elementary School, discussed the unique aspects of teaching in a charter school. She noted the strong sense of community and parental involvement in charter schools, which creates a supportive environment for both students and educators.
The week aimed to uplift the teaching profession, as stated by COE Faculty Chair Dr. Alicia Kozimor. The Lopes Leap to Teach and Lead event provided students with the opportunity to connect with over 40 educational organizations, explore potential career opportunities, and enhance their professional development.
