Three students from Grand Canyon University (GCU) have been recognized for their entrepreneurial achievements by being named to the 2024 AZ Inno Under 25 list. The Phoenix Business Journal compiled this list to honor young business leaders who are 25 or younger and operate companies.

Lucas Patten, one of the honorees, is the founder of Powder Pal and a winner of the Canyon Challenge. Reflecting on his recognition, Patten stated, “For me, it’s like, wow, this could be something. Other people are looking at me, counting on me, hoping I go somewhere. It means a lot. It’s really encouraging.” He is scheduled to graduate this winter and has established a workstation at Canyon Ventures.

Mackenzy Leray, another student recognized in the list, founded Signature Tote Co., which provides durable and eco-friendly bags to grocery stores and customers. She also won the People’s Choice Award at Canyon Challenge with a $1,000 prize. Leray transferred to GCU after initially pursuing orthodontics in Montana but realized her interest lay more in business.

Caleb McCandliss is an engineering major who owns Car Chap lip balm holder and serves as president of the IDEA Club at GCU. His product was listed among the top car accessories by Car and Driver magazine last year. McCandliss expressed pride in representing GCU alongside his peers: “Lucas, Mackenzy and myself are proud to represent GCU,” he said.

The students' businesses were supported through courses taught by Robert Vera at GCU's start-up accelerator program called Canyon Ventures. Vera recommended these students for their inclusion in the AZ Inno Under 25 list along with other entrepreneurs such as Ryan Pace of Involio and Ben Lambertson of Ace Simulations.

Leray spoke about her experience with opportunities provided by GCU: “It was amazing,” she said regarding her time at Canyon Ventures under Vera's mentorship.

McCandliss also shared his aspirations for members of IDEA Club: “I’m just one stepping stone,” he noted while expressing gratitude towards those who have supported him.
