Grand Canyon University students have upheld a longstanding tradition despite facing extreme weather conditions. Camp Elliott, a four-day campout on the Quad, serves as a prelude to Midnight Madness, the university's basketball season kick-off event. This year, fewer students participated due to record-breaking heat in Phoenix, with temperatures reaching 113 degrees.

Wilson Neitzel, president of the Havocs, noted that about 250 students set up tents and hammocks on the Quad's perimeter for shade. "The students out there right now, they're some of the more passionate Havocs we have," Neitzel said. "They are braving the heat for this cool event."

Students endure high temperatures to secure prime seating for Midnight Madness and receive perks like T-shirts and a chance to be part of the spirited student section. Anna Foster emphasized its importance: "Camping out for Midnight Madness is a GCU event every student should experience."

Camp Elliott honors Daniel Elliott, who initiated camping out for basketball games at GCU. Over time, it became an annual tradition with participation from hundreds of students.

Neitzel explained that Havocs leaders ensure each group has representation at their tent throughout the campout. The campers also engage in various activities such as games and fitness classes organized by the Havocs.

GCU men's basketball guard Makaih Williams provided pizza to campers during one evening of Camp Elliott. Neitzel observed friendships forming among participants: "On Monday, we see groups staying around their tents and not talking much...by Thursday night...students are singing and dancing with each other."

Midnight Madness will take place at Global Credit Union Arena with a theme of Lope Vegas.
