Illuminate Community Church's Lead Pastor, Jason Fritz, addressed the congregation at Global Credit Union Arena on Monday, emphasizing the importance of valuing spiritual wealth over material possessions. Fritz conveyed that while it is natural to desire and accumulate items after earning money, such pursuits can be misleading.

“The way you treasure is through your heart,” Fritz stated. He further explained that Jesus does not seek financial contributions but rather desires one's heart. “The cold, hard fact is the way we spend what we have is a good indicator of what’s important to us.”

Fritz shared a personal anecdote from 32 years ago when he and his wife Jill experienced a false sense of security due to their earnings. Despite starting as consumers, they realized the unnecessary nature of their acquisitions. “The point isn’t that we shouldn’t have treasures," he noted, "but Jesus presses in and He says, ‘Keep your things in their proper place.’”

Fritz also highlighted the significance of performing good deeds without seeking attention. Referencing Matthew 6:1-6, he criticized religious leaders during Jesus' time for publicizing their generosity for praise. “Beware of practicing your righteousness before other people in order to be seen by them,” he warned.

He urged the audience to help those in need without distancing themselves due to wealth or possessions. Citing global poverty statistics, Fritz reminded attendees that many Americans are considered wealthy by global standards.

Fritz used Matthew 19:16 as an example where a young man sought eternal life but was unwilling to part with his wealth despite following commandments. This story underscored his message about prioritizing spiritual over material wealth.

In closing, Fritz encouraged living simply and storing treasures in heaven rather than on earth. Quoting Luke 12:15, he advised against covetousness and emphasized focusing on heavenly rewards.

The next Chapel speaker will be Tree Demeter from Redemption Church of Peoria at 11 a.m., October 21st at Global Credit Union Arena.
