Glendale Union High School District Superinterdent Brian Capistran (2023) | Glendale Union High School District

Superintendent Brian Capistran has announced his retirement from the Glendale Union High School District (GUHSD), effective June 2025. This will mark the end of a notable 30-year career within the district. Mr. Capistran began his tenure as a Spanish teacher and coach at Sunnyslope High School, later advancing to various administrative roles including assistant principal, principal, school safety administrator, assistant superintendent, and associate superintendent of curriculum and instruction.

In 2015, he became GUHSD's superintendent, where he has led for nearly a decade. Under his leadership, GUHSD and its high schools received "A" ratings from the Arizona Department of Education. His efforts have focused on academic excellence and collaboration.

Beyond district duties, Superintendent Capistran has contributed to numerous local and state educational committees and boards. He held leadership positions with organizations such as the Glendale Chamber of Commerce and the Arizona Business and Education Coalition. Nationally recognized for his expertise, he served on AASA/The School Superintendents Association's Board of Directors.

Superintendent Capistran was awarded the ASA All Arizona Superintendent award for large school districts in recognition of his contributions to education.

As he prepares for retirement, Mr. Capistran expressed gratitude for his time at GUHSD. The Governing Board will soon outline the process for selecting a new superintendent to begin in July 2025.
