Junior social work major Raphaela Bravo, a student at Grand Canyon University (GCU), has found herself forming unexpected connections with senior citizens at the Glencroft Center for Modern Aging in Glendale. As part of her volunteer work with Changing Lives Outreach, Bravo engages with residents through activities like cold-hot treatments for neuropathy.
Bravo initially focused on helping children but discovered a new perspective working with older adults. She remarked, “When I got there, I realized they need a lot of help. They just need someone to talk to.” Her experiences have shifted her focus toward working with older communities.
Heather Emert, program manager and coordinator for Changing Lives Outreach, noted that the 66 volunteers in the program serve at multiple outlets for the elderly. Emert stated, “I think they are getting a new perspective of people, hearing the stories of people of different backgrounds and ages.”
Steve Heller, vice president and director of operations at Glencroft and a GCU graduate, emphasized the facility's approach to aging that combines faith and wellness. He observed how students evolve from underestimating seniors to learning from them.
GCU students like Penelope Kieborz also benefit from these interactions. Kieborz shared her learning experience: “I learn so much about random things from them... The little stuff then turns into big stuff.”
The facility integrates ZoeLife's holistic wellness approach and plans to host an Amazon founder Jeff Bezos’ preschool next year. Heller highlighted their focus on intergenerational engagement.
For Bravo, volunteering has changed her outlook significantly: “It’s really changed my perspective,” she said.
