Hunter Breshears, a Grand Canyon University (GCU) alumnus, has launched his first brick-and-mortar location for Chewk’s Cookies at The Frederick in Phoenix. Breshears attributes his success to the principles of servant leadership learned during his time at GCU. "They always taught me I am not the most important thing in the equation. It’s all about serving people," he stated.
Chewk's Cookies is one of several businesses started by GCU alumni that emphasize community service and connection. Juan Robles, another graduate, runs Juanderful Tacos near the campus, while Lynnette Fredrick operates The Black Sheep coffee shop in Glendale.
Dr. Allison Mason from GCU's Colangelo College of Business highlighted how the university supports student entrepreneurs through various programs and competitions. “GCU alumni are suited for small business success because we provide many opportunities for students to interact and engage in the startup community,” she said.
Breshears' journey began when he switched to GCU after witnessing its entrepreneurial environment during a college visit. His cookies have become popular at events such as weddings and corporate gatherings. Breshears emphasizes creating a warm atmosphere at his store: "You come in and leave feeling warmer and more loved."
Robles also stresses service at Juanderful Tacos: "It resonated a lot with me to try to be of service to others." He shares a personal connection with many customers due to his background as an undocumented immigrant protected by DACA.
Fredrick’s coffee shop focuses on community involvement, hosting events like worship nights and featuring art from local contributors. She reflects on her faith-driven approach: “We are a Christian coffee shop, but everyone is welcome.”
These alumni demonstrate how lessons from their education have influenced their ventures into successful small businesses that serve their communities.
