The College of Humanities and Social Sciences at Grand Canyon University held its Fall Senior Showcase for the first time this semester, allowing December graduates to present their capstone projects. Dr. Heidi Boldway, CHSS assistant dean, noted that the showcase helps students "build confidence" and prepares them for job interviews with potential employers attending the event.
Gage Hropoff, a government major, discussed economic inequality in his presentation. He proposed increasing capital gain taxes to address wage disparities, suggesting that taxing the top 0.3% could generate $1.5 trillion for disadvantaged programs.
In another project, math majors Wilson Neitzel and Kalvin Haywood analyzed statistics from GCU men's basketball games, finding a correlation between assists and three-point shooting percentages. Math instructor Dr. Huy Dinh appreciated the practical applications of math showcased by students.
Sophia Ruhl-Raingruber, president of the Sociology and Social Work Club, advocated for a fall showcase to include all graduating students. She presented her research on "Menstrual Inequality," focusing on toxic chemicals in feminine products and their impact on economically disadvantaged populations.
Other students aimed to apply their research in business or social causes. John Sedlmayr explored water filter efficiency using solar power, while Samantha Miller showcased her nonprofit storytelling work. Communications major Sophia Vanderhoff addressed mental health stigma within church communities.
Melanie Galindo researched anxiety disorder stigma among teenage Chicanos, aiming to create a family support group program in Phoenix.
