University Pastor Dr. Tim Griffin addressed the Grand Canyon University community during Monday Chapel, focusing on the Sermon on the Mount. He discussed how living as a Christian sometimes requires going against societal norms to achieve spiritual goals.
Griffin spoke at Global Credit Union Arena, emphasizing that "sometimes getting what you’d really like to have in life goes a different route than you sometimes think." He explained that Jesus taught His disciples that reaching their spiritual destination might require taking an unconventional path.
He highlighted three key points from Matthew 5:5-7: "Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven," "Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted," and "Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth." These principles challenge societal norms and outline how followers of Jesus should live.
Griffin elaborated on these teachings by saying, “This idea of being poor in spirit means to have a sense of spiritual need and poverty and bankruptcy – to come to Him... with a repentant part and a broken heart.” On mourning, he noted it involves recognizing one's sinfulness and separation from God. Regarding meekness, Griffin clarified it does not mean weakness but rather “strength under control.”
To illustrate his message further, Griffin shared personal anecdotes about his dental issues. He recounted years of dental problems culminating in receiving dental implants—a process he initially dreaded but later found beneficial. This experience served as an analogy for embracing challenging situations that ultimately lead to positive outcomes.
Griffin concluded by reiterating James's words: “Humble yourself before the Lord, and He will exalt you.” He encouraged humility over ambition as prescribed by scripture: “You humble yourself before Him, and He will lift you up in His time.”
The next Chapel speaker will be Des Wadsworth from Grace Community Church at 11 a.m. on January 27 at Global Credit Union Arena.
