Kevin Bock, the interim director of Grand Canyon University's Thundering Heard Pep Band, brings a wealth of experience from his background in symphony orchestras to his current role. Bock has performed with renowned orchestras such as Detroit, Phoenix, and Boston and attended the Interlochen Arts Academy in Michigan.
During a recent rehearsal at GCU's campus, Bock led the band through Green Day's "Holiday," emphasizing technique and sound quality. "At measure nine – horns, 'bones and baritone – don’t be afraid. It’s just G minor guys," he instructed. He encouraged trumpet players to rely on air pressure rather than forcing high notes.
Bock describes his approach to music as focusing on mastery of the instrument rather than mechanics. “The skills are the same. It works because of mastery of the instrument,” he explained about working with the pep band.
His diverse musical background includes performing at Boston Red Sox games and playing various styles like jazz Dixieland. Bock emphasizes adaptability in music performance: “You have to play to the crowd, even classical musicians."
Bock's teaching philosophy evolved over time; he learned that effective teaching involves understanding individual student needs. “When you get good at teaching, you teach how a student needs to be taught," he noted.
Trevor Twining, a trombone section leader, praised Bock's ability to enhance music by making precise adjustments: “He’s amazing with music." Senior baritone Grant Fuchs appreciated Bock's focus on mastering fewer songs for better performance quality.
Bock encourages band members to treat their work professionally while ensuring it remains enjoyable for both performers and audiences. He selects songs that resonate with students and alumni alike and coordinates performances with game events for maximum impact.
For Bock, balancing entertainment with artistic expression is key: "We are entertainers, not just musicians."
