Jeri Burns, who has served as the academic operations manager for Grand Canyon University's College of Doctoral Studies, is set to retire following the completion of the college's 3,500th dissertation. Burns was among the initial employees when the college was founded and has spent 17 years contributing to its growth.
Reflecting on her career, Burns highlighted a memorable moment when she wrote a letter for a doctoral candidate that allowed him to bring his family from Africa for his graduation ceremony. "I was here when we birthed this baby," she said, noting the complexity and growth of the doctoral process at GCU. The college began with one degree program and has since expanded significantly.
Dr. Michael Berger, Dean of the College of Doctoral Studies, is expected to sign the milestone dissertation this February. He commended Burns' contributions alongside others in the college who continuously innovate and adapt to meet learners' needs.
Dr. Oscar Edwards, who earned his doctorate in business administration from GCU in 2022, praised Burns for her organizational skills and attention to detail that facilitated his graduation preparations. "The seamless 'final instructions' Ms. Burns mustered up must be a hallmark of hers," he stated.
Dr. Nicholas Markette, assistant dean and first graduate of the program, also lauded Burns: "Jeri used love to get 3,500 dissertations across the finish line."
Burns joined GCU after leaving Arizona State University and was intrigued by the novelty of an exclusively online doctoral program. She played a crucial role in organizing residencies and managing logistical challenges during her early days at GCU.
She recalled starting in what was then called the Office of Graduate Studies in the Fleming Building, now known as Lope Shop. Her efforts were instrumental during times when resources were limited but gradually expanded as needed.
Burns acknowledged Dr. Berger's leadership style as supportive and open-minded, contributing positively to her work environment.
Upon retirement, Burns plans to take some time off with her husband without any immediate commitments.
