Maricopa County Superior Court Judge Lori Horn Bustamante emphasized the importance of adhering to the law during her talk at Grand Canyon University. Speaking as part of the Public Square Series, Bustamante shared insights into her role as a judge and the journey that led her there.

Bustamante, who graduated from GCU in 1994 with degrees in criminal justice and history, later studied law at Pepperdine University. She established a law firm specializing in juvenile cases before transitioning to personal injury law. Eventually, she was appointed as a commissioner and then a judge by former Arizona Governor Jan Brewer.

As the presiding judge for Maricopa County's juvenile court, Bustamante focuses on fairness and rehabilitation within the justice system. She highlighted a case involving a 17-year-old with severe burns where she advocated for fair compensation beyond an initial settlement offer.

During her address, Bustamante noted public misconceptions about judicial responsibilities, emphasizing that the juvenile justice system prioritizes rehabilitation to prevent minors from reoffending. Her initiatives include programs educating juveniles on gun violence dangers.

Bustamante also addressed balancing professional duties with personal life, stressing the importance of family support and faith-based systems. She acknowledged the emotional challenges of her work but underscored reliance on prayer for strength.

Her words resonated with students like Riley Swedberg and Nia’jah Harper-Means, who expressed admiration for Bustamante's dedication to integrity and advocacy for children. Senior Alexa McCoy gained appreciation for rehabilitative services' significance in criminal justice.

Encouraging students to rely on prayer and community support, Bustamante quoted Philippians 3:13: "I can do all things through Christ, who gives me strength."
