Four alumni and a men's athletics team were inducted into Grand Canyon University's Alumni Hall of Fame during the university's Homecoming festivities on Saturday. The event celebrated GCU’s 75th anniversary, with University President Brian Mueller reflecting on the institution's growth over the years.
Mueller addressed attendees by highlighting the importance of staying true to GCU's Christian mission. “Seventy-five years of purpose and 15 years of transformation. God has blessed us beyond what we could’ve imagined,” he said, emphasizing that the goal has always been to follow God’s vision.
The inductees included Judge Lori Horn Bustamante, Dr. Noelle Trinder, teacher Lynette Stant, Brent Cannon from National Bank of America, and the 2012 men’s indoor track and field team. Deans from each respective college introduced the honorees.
Dr. Sherman Elliott presented Lori Horn Bustamante with her plaque. A 1994 graduate with a bachelor's degree in history and justice studies, she serves as a presiding judge over Maricopa County Juvenile Court System. "GCU has taught me to make sure to be a part of a community and always stay connected with Jesus," Bustamante said.
Brent Cannon was inducted by Dean John Kaites. He earned his master's degree in business administration in 2012 and is currently an executive vice president at National Bank of America. “This is a very humbling and honoring award,” Cannon remarked.
Lynette Stant received her recognition from Dr. Meredith Critchfield for her work as an elementary school teacher on the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Reservation. Stant noted her honor in being seen as an indigenous teacher through this recognition.
Dr. Noelle Trinder was honored by Dr. Lisa Smith for her contributions at Banner Health where she oversees clinical placements and served as interim chief nursing officer in 2021. “This is a culmination of many years of hard work and dedication," Trinder stated.
The 2012 NCAA Division II indoor track and field team was also acknowledged for winning a national championship under Coach Tom Flood's leadership in only their second year as a program at GCU.
Coach Flood expressed pride in his former athletes: “It is an honor for these guys, 13 years later, to be recognized for their national championship.”
