Former Arizona Governor Doug Ducey and three other notable figures were recognized at the fifth annual Colangelo Servant Leadership Awards ceremony held at Grand Canyon University’s Havoc House. The event, organized by the Colangelo College of Business and sponsored by Freeport-McMoRan, celebrated individuals who have made significant contributions to the community.

Ducey shared his journey from Toledo, Ohio, to Arizona in 1982. "I’d never been there," he said. "I knew no one. But I thought there was incredible opportunity here." He expressed gratitude to native Arizonans for creating a welcoming state and aligned his political platform with Jerry Colangelo's vision for economic development.

The awards honor those who embody the ideals of servant leadership as exemplified by Jerry Colangelo since his arrival in Arizona in 1968. "When we have the opportunity to honor people who embellish that whole concept, it’s important to bring recognition to those individuals," Colangelo stated.

Dr. Richard Gray, CEO of Mayo Clinic in Arizona since 2019, emphasized patient-centered care as a core value. His family has strong ties with GCU; two of his sons are current or former students.

Tom Lewis founded T.W. Lewis Co., a top home building business in the Valley, and established a foundation supporting education and nonprofits. He praised GCU's approach to student care and preparation for life.

Dr. Chevy Humphrey has served as president and CEO of the Griffin Museum of Science and Industry after leading the Arizona Science Center for 15 years. She credited Phoenix with shaping her leadership philosophy focused on service and inclusivity.

GCU President Brian Mueller acknowledged the impact of these leaders: “We can’t tell you how honored we are to have you here.”
