City of Peoria issued the following announcement on March 31
Effective immediately, the city of Peoria will be closing additional amenities within city parks in an effort to reduce the spread of coronavirus (COVID-19). Such closures include park restrooms, playgrounds, tennis and basketball courts, dog parks, select sports fields, neighborhood park parking lots, and any group play areas. Ramada reservations will also be canceled through April 30
“The Governor’s directive that parks must remain open aligns with the recommendations of top health officials, citing numerous mental and physical benefits gained from spending time outside, recreating and exercising,” said Mayor Cathy Carlat. “Providing a safe environment with the best prospects for physical distancing enables Peoria residents to enjoy the benefits of springtime in Arizona, while we all do our part to prevent the spread of COVID-19.”
These closures come after Arizona Governor Doug Ducey issued a Stay Home, Stay Healthy, Stay Connected executive order and Mayor Carlat declared a local emergency that closed all public city facilities. The park amenities that are closed will have signs indicating the closure as a reminder to residents. All open spaces, passive play spaces, trails, and walking paths will remain open for public use. Physical distancing and hygiene guidelines recommended by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) still apply in these areas, which include limiting exposure to people outside of immediate family members, avoiding groups of 10 or more people and maintaining six feet between each person.
“After reviewing the executive order and the CDC’s guidelines, we are confident that this decision is in the best interest of the health and safety of our residents,” said Peoria Director of Parks, Recreation and Community Facilities John Sefton. “Parks and open spaces have a proven positive impact on the physical and mental health of our community. We strongly encourage exercise and outdoor activities in our parks; however, doing so must be while taking the recommended precautions.”
