Shannon's Law

Gun

El Mirage Police Department issued the following announcement on Dec. 31.

2022 is at our doorstep and we are asking that everyone please celebrate safely and responsibly. DO NOT fire any guns into the air to celebrate!!

Shannon's Law makes it illegal to fire a gun into the air in Arizona's cities and towns.

In June 1999, 14-year-old Shannon Smith was talking on the telephone in the backyard of her central Phoenix home. A bullet that was fired into the air over a mile away struck her in the head, tragically ending her life. Shannon’s parents united with law enforcement officials, prosecutors, politicians, and citizens worked to make a change

The result was the creation of Arizona Revised Statute 13-3107, “Shannon’s Law,” which makes it a felony for anyone “who with criminal negligence discharges a firearm within or into the limits of any municipality” in Arizona.
