Pastor Palmer Chinchen of The Grove in Chandler, Arizona, recently delivered a thought-provoking message during Grand Canyon University's Monday Chapel at Global Credit Union Arena. Chinchen emphasized the significance of meals as more than just food, stating, "Why was there so much about eating and food in the Gospels? Because a meal is more than food... Jesus did not come preaching an ideology, or even preaching a doctrine."
Chinchen illustrated the importance of building camaraderie by setting up a table during his sermon, symbolizing the welcoming nature of meals. He shared personal experiences, including a poignant memory of Thanksgiving where a lack of an extra chair led to a friend spending the holiday at a taco stand, reflecting on the missed opportunity for true connection.
During the Chapel, Chinchen also referenced biblical passages, highlighting the symbolic nature of sharing a cup as a blessing. He recounted experiences from his past, including instances of both exclusion and inclusion, underscoring the power of hospitality and love in shared meals.
Additionally, Chinchen reminisced about a transformative moment in Cuba, where different individuals came together at a banquet, saying, "It looked like heaven here... I thought this is what every church in the world should look like it. It really was a transforming moment for me."
The pastor's message extended to the importance of creating welcoming spaces, such as the workshop auditorium at The Grove designed to foster community. He emphasized the significance of meals in expressing care and affection, as seen in the gesture of serving lasagna to students during the Chapel.
In a separate address, University Pastor Dr. Tim Griffin commended the GCU men's basketball team and students for their support, praising their representation and enthusiasm.
The next Chapel at GCU Arena will feature Pastor Jon Demeter of Redemption Church in Peoria on April 1, continuing the tradition of engaging and inspiring messages within the university community.
