Leadership is a core element at the Honors College of Grand Canyon University, emphasized through the newly launched Leadership in Action Fellowship. The program aims to enhance student leadership skills and provide professional development opportunities.

"Lead like a great conductor," stated Dr. Marette Hahn, Director of the Honors College, addressing students during a fellowship meeting. "You don’t have to be the expert in everything. It’s more so about bringing the experts together and getting them to chat and work together."

The academic year marks not only the return of classes but also the introduction of new leadership programs and committees within the college. Dr. Hahn expressed a desire for students to "build and strengthen the Honors community but also put what they are learning here into action when they leave."

Following an application process in spring, 50 students joined the fellowship, which consists of five committees led by student directors: Academic Excellence, Community and Belonging, Integrity, Faith and Service, First-Year Committee, and Professional and Leadership Development.

Each committee offers specific growth opportunities; for instance, Academic Excellence provides research opportunities while Professional Development focuses on career skills.

Amelia Miller, Director of Integrity, Faith and Service Committee said: “If you want to be a part of it, you are pledging to be a part of this community and wanting to make a change.”

Students meet weekly for discussions on future projects such as bonding activities or campus initiatives. Guest speakers from various departments also contribute by mentoring students in leadership skills.

Keerthana Krishnakumar Juttu shared her journey from non-involvement as a freshman to becoming President of Leadership in Action Fellowship: "After that I wanted to see how much impact I could make..."

Isabel Joy Abbott, Vice President of the fellowship remarked on her personal growth: “I never really thought I would do something like this... Coming out of it has made me a more rounded person.”

The college continues its commitment to creating an inviting environment for its students.
