Christine Morrison and her daughter Anya participated in a charcuterie board class during Family Weekend at Grand Canyon University (GCU). The class was led by Abigail Schlesinger, a student who started her business, the Charcuterie Collective, at age 16. Schlesinger shared her skills with around 120 participants, including the Morrisons, who humorously admitted to being "charcuterie board imposters."
Schlesinger's family tradition of making charcuterie boards inspired her business. She has taught classes across Arizona but never at GCU until now. Her family supports her business efforts, with Lindsay Schlesinger expressing pride in Abigail's success.
The event was part of Family Weekend activities, which included various events such as a student market and chapel service featuring President Brian Mueller. Christine Morrison appreciated hearing about GCU's community work and enjoyed visiting Anya.
Other families also participated in the weekend's activities. Ethan Mancilla attended the charcuterie class with his family despite initial reluctance. His father Gilbert saw it as an opportunity to explore the campus more.
Welcome Programs hosted Family Weekend for the first time, featuring events like a 5K run and a family barbecue. Alden Sia noted that it's a time when students are not embarrassed to be seen with their parents due to the inclusive atmosphere.
The GCU Dance team held clinics for young participants like Brinley Taylor, teaching them game day routines. Freshman Ava Sunkel won the Thunderbolt shopping spree at Lope Shop, grabbing items worth $572.72 in honor of GCU’s 75th anniversary.
Family Weekend concluded with festivities such as the Lope Family Barbecue, where students and families gathered to enjoy food and company.
