Grand Canyon University's dance department recently concluded its annual guest artist residency, offering students a chance to learn from professional artists. The series included workshops that introduced new techniques and provided mentorship opportunities.
Lawrence Fung, a choreographer and founder of Kraken Still and Film company, was the first guest artist this fall. He shared his expertise in balancing ballet with break dancing. "My experience teaching GCU dancers has been great," Fung stated. He emphasized the importance of small steps in mastering complex choreography.
Fabiana Poulis, an instructor at Ballet Arizona, focused on intricate body movements during her sessions. "I was impressed to see their level of ballet," Poulis remarked about the students' skills.
Key’Aira Lockett, a University of Houston assistant professor of dance, brought a mix of ballet, modern, jazz, and traditional African diasporic techniques to her workshops. "They were really invested in figuring out for themselves what works for them individually," Lockett observed.
The residency aims to broaden students' knowledge by exposing them to diverse styles and perspectives. Dance major Paige Heilig expressed appreciation for these experiences: "It enhances our experience at GCU."
The work from these residencies will be featured in the upcoming winter concert titled "Worthy" at Ethington Theatre from December 6-8. The concert will explore themes of worthiness through various performances.
Bekki Price, Chair of Dance at GCU, highlighted the program's supportive environment: "Coming into our program they have the opportunity to grow as individuals." The concert will include seven faculty pieces and two student pieces reflecting different interpretations of worthiness.
