City of Glendale issued the following announcement on Nov. 19
All the fun of Glendale’s Sports and Entertainment District just got a lot closer with the opening of a new stretch of Cardinals Way. This mile-long extension along the Bethany Home Road alignment fills a gap between 83rd and 91st Avenues. The addition completes another major east-west arterial which links with the Loop 101. The opening gives residents and visitors headed to the Sports and Entertainment District from downtown Glendale and central Phoenix another alternative as they travel to Cardinals or Coyotes games or come to the area for dining and entertainment.
In addition to easing access to existing amenities, this new section of road will lead to the Crystal Lagoons Island Resort development, coming to Cardinals Way and 95th Avenue. The Crystal Lagoons project will bring even more dining and entertainment options along with an 11-acre public access lagoon.
“After all these years, Bethany Home Road with this Cardinals Way extension now connects East Valley and central Phoenix residents to Westgate, State Farm Stadium and the Sports and Entertainment District,” says Glendale Mayor Jerry Weiers. “Glendale is committed to making sure we have the infrastructure in place to support the continued economic boom found in our city.”
The opening is a major win for fans traveling to mega-events and games at Gila River Arena and State Farm Stadium, especially as we look forward to a post-pandemic world.
“Even in times of adversity and challenge, progress is possible when you are committed to it, and the city of Glendale clearly is,” says Nicole Bidwill, with the Arizona Cardinals. “Hopefully a return to ‘normal’ is in our very near future. And full crowds and large events will be able to take advantage of this extension to make the fan experience even better and smoother.”
The Cardinals Way extension will also serve as an everyday traffic reliever for this booming area.
“Cardinals Way (formerly known as Bethany Home Road) between 83rd and 91st Avenues is a critical link in creating yet another vital transportation option for booming West Glendale,” says Councilmember Joyce Clark of the Yucca District, where the road is located. “No longer do Glendale residents have to rely upon heavily congested Camelback Road or Glendale Avenue exclusively. It demonstrates the city’s continued support of the unprecedented development occurring in West Glendale, including Westgate, Zanjero and the newly announced Crystal Lagoons project.”
And, the road is a testament to the power of public-private partnerships. Pulte Homes and other developers in the area contributed half of the $6 million to build the road.
“Cardinals Way will serve as the gateway to our StoneHaven community, and conveniently connect residents to some of the best outdoor shopping, dining and local entertainment the Valley has to offer,” says Rebecca Lundberg, Pulte Homes Arizona Division President. “We are proud to partner with the city on this addition and know it will be a tremendous enhancement to support the future growth of Glendale.”
Construction began in November of 2019. The new stretch of road is 4 lanes. The project includes new sidewalks, signage striping, signal enhancements at 91st and 83rd Avenues as well as a new signal at 87th Avenue. Glendale renamed the section of Bethany Home Road, from 83rd Avenue to the Loop 101, Cardinals Way in February 2019.
